Our Mission
About VoltReflex
A free, accurate, and privacy-respecting reaction time tester built for gamers, athletes, students, and anyone curious about their reflex speed.
What is VoltReflex?
VoltReflex is a free, browser-based reaction time testing tool designed to give anyone an accurate, instant measurement of their visual reflex speed — no account, no software download, and no fee. We built VoltReflex because we believe that useful cognitive performance tools should be accessible to everyone, from elite esports athletes to curious students.
The test is simple: when the screen turns green, click or tap as fast as you can. We measure the elapsed time in milliseconds using the browser's high-resolution performance.now() timer and instantly show you how your score compares to human benchmarks across age groups, professions, and skill levels.
Our Features
Millisecond precision
Sub-ms timer accuracy using the Web Performance API.
Multi-round sessions
5 rounds per session for a statistically reliable average.
Instant benchmarking
See your percentile vs. gamers, athletes & average adults.
Works everywhere
Fully responsive — phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop.
Light & dark mode
Automatic theme detection with manual toggle.
No tracking
We don't collect or store your test results.
How We Measure Reaction Time
VoltReflex uses the browser's built-in performance.now() API, which provides timestamp resolution of less than 1 ms — far more precise than a standard JavaScript Date object. Here's what happens during a test:
- Random delay: After you click to start, a randomised 1.5–5 second wait prevents you from anticipating the signal. This ensures we measure pure reaction, not prediction.
- Stimulus display: The arena changes colour from red to green. The timestamp is recorded the moment the event fires in the browser.
- Response capture: When you click, a second timestamp is recorded. The difference is your reaction time in milliseconds.
- Averaging: Five rounds are averaged to produce a stable, representative score, smoothing out any single-round outliers caused by blinking or micro-distractions.
Hardware limitations
The main external factor is your monitor's refresh rate. At 60 Hz, the green colour can only physically appear on screen once every 16.7 ms — so results carry an inherent ±8 ms variance at this refresh rate. At 144 Hz or 240 Hz this is reduced to ±3–4 ms. For this reason, VoltReflex is ideal for personal benchmarking and tracking improvement over time, but is not a clinical-grade diagnostic instrument.
Who is VoltReflex for?
- Gamers & esports athletes — Track your reaction time improvements as you train, and benchmark against pro players.
- Sports athletes — Monitor reflex speed as part of your broader performance data.
- Students & researchers — Use VoltReflex for simple visual reaction time experiments and cognitive performance studies.
- Curious individuals — Find out where your reflexes sit compared to the average person and what factors affect them.
- Teachers & educators — Demonstrate neuroscience concepts around stimulus-response latency in an engaging, interactive way.
About VoltReflex
- VoltReflex is a free online reflex test that measures your reaction time
in milliseconds. It runs entirely in your browser, needs no sign-up, and
shows how your score compares with gamers, athletes and the average person.
- Who's behind VoltReflex
Hi, I'm Robiul Islam.I'm a developer based in the USA, and I built VoltReflex on my own. I started this project because I wanted to check
my reaction time for competitive gaming, and most tests I found were
cluttered with ads or didn't explain what the numbers meant. My goal is simple: a fast, clean test, clean test with results that are honest and easy to
understand.
- How our content is written The articles and benchmarks on VoltReflex are written by me and based on published research and official sources, which are linked in each article. I'm not a doctor or a scientist, so I don't give medical advice.
When I find an error or newer research, I update the article and change. If you spot a mistake, please tell me through the contact page. I read every message.
- Your privacy VoltReflex doesn't require an account. Your test results stay in your browser and are not
sent to our servers.
